BUCHA. PAINTINGS BY ANDRZEJ FOGTT

EXHIBITION AT THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL IN BRUSSELS

31.03.2023-14.04.2023

An exhibition has opened at the headquarters of the European Council in Brussels. It consists of a series of paintings by Andrzej Fogtt created as a direct reaction to the events in Bucha near Kyiv. When, at the end of March 2022, Ukrainian forces liberated Bucha from Russian occupation, the world got to know the bestiality of the occupier. As President Volodymyr Zelensky said, discovering the acts of terror in Bucha was the most difficult moment of the entire war for him.

Andrzej Fogtt’s works are a form of a war chronicle, providing an artistic, emotional vision of Russian atrocities. The exhibition was previously shown at the Ukrainian Civil Society Hub at the European Parliament. The exhibition in the EU Council was organized thanks to the efforts of Ambassador Andrzej Sadoś from the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the European Union in cooperation with the Mission of Ukraine to the European Union and the Katarzyna Napiórkowska Art Gallery.

The exhibition’s opening date in the Council of the European Union coincided with the anniversary of disclosing war crimes in Bucha. The show will be open until 14/04/2023 in Brussels, the Lex European Council building (5th floor) (admission according to building policy).

On this occasion, it is worth mentioning the www.rememberbucha.eu project, focusing on artistic and documentary reactions to the bestiality of the Russian aggressor.

BUCHA SERIES

Andrzej Fogtt started creating a series of works entitled Bucha, when at the turn of March and April 2022, the bestiality of Russian soldiers in the attacked Ukraine came to light. After the Ukrainian armed forces liberated the territories from Russian occupation, shocking facts about the suffering inflicted by the occupiers were revealed.

Bucha, a place of torture and intimidation of civilians, has become a symbol of the methods used by the Russians in other places as well: e.g. Irpien, Borodzianka, and Hostoml.

The bestiality of the aggressors ranks them among the greatest barbarians in history by the worst features of their proceedings- brutality, cruelty, and lack of any norms.

RememberBucha.eu is an independent initiative aimed at showing artistic reactions to war crimes committed by Russians in Ukraine. It is a curatorial project to collect information on works of art reacting to Russian cruelty.
